Goldsmith Island
HISTORY
Goldsmith Island
Goldsmith Island was named in 1879 by Staff Commander E. P. Bedwell, RN,
in SS Llewellyn. Bedwell seized upon the 'Smith' name in the
Sir James Smith group and named many of its component islands after the
trade of the smith; Tinsmith, Blacksmith and so forth (Bedwell's
charts).

Armstrong, whose address appeared as 21 Boyle Street, Cremorne, Sydney NSW
was granted occupation licence 471 from 30 June 1931 but it is not known what he

Ansett Transport Industries 1947
In 1947 Ansett Transport Industries
became interested
in establishing resorts in the Whitsundays and this was one of the islands they
considered though permission was not given by the State Government and the
island was declared a national park in 1936 (Ansett Transport Industries
letter to Secretary for Health and Home Affairs 11 September 1947).
