Derwent Island

Derwent Island
Derwent Island was originally designated K2 island by
Lieutenant Matthew Flinders, RN, when he passed through the area in HMS Investigator
in October 1802 (Flinders' charts).
In 1879 Staff Commander E. P. Bedwell, RN, in SS Llewellyn gave it its new name which is one of the many names from the then English county of Cumberland he brought to the Whitsundays following James Cook's 1770 designation of the group as 'The Cumberland Isles' (Bedwell's charts). In 1974 Cumberland was absorbed into the new county of Cumbria.
Derwent Water is a lake in the Lake District of Cumbria.
