Comston Island

HISTORY

Comston Island
Comston Island was first charted by Commander H. M. Bingham, RN, in HMS Virago in March 1868 but neither his survey chart nor his sailing directions give it a name though adjoining islands on the western side of Shaw Island (Keyser, Mansell, Thomas) were named by Bingham after crew members. The name appeared first in 1879 in the charts of Staff Commander E. P. Bedwell, RN, following his surveys in SS Llewellyn. Possibly it was after a crew member on either Virago or Llewellyn.

The Information on the Whitsunday Islands is reproduced by kind permission of Mr. Ray Blackwood from his book: " The Whitsunday Islands An Historical Dictionary ".
