Weather & Climate

Situated 20º4'S and 148º5'E the Whitsunday is on the same latitude as Rio de Janeiro, Mauritius, Tahiti and New Caledonia. The climate is  subtropical with an average daily temperature of 27ºC. January is the warmest averaging 30ºC and July is the coolest averaging 24ºC. However, sunscreens, hats and sunglasses are recommended all year around. The water remains a pleasant 23ºC-27ºC all year.

Getting to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are on the east coast of Australia, in the state of Queensland. (see maps). Is is about 1100 km north of Brisbane (the capital city of Queensland). Follow the Bruce Highway (Highway #1),  to Proserpine and turn right (north-east)just past the bridge crossing the Proserpine River. Follow this road for 1.5km, turning right (east) at the "T " intersection and then follow this road (Shute Harbour Road) to Cannonvale(20km), Airlie Beach (22km), and on to Shute Harbour (35km).

AIR: International access to the Whitsundays is via connecting flights in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Cairns International Airports. Regular domestic flights fly into Proserpine Airport (10 km south of Proserpine- Bus and taxi services to the Whitsundays available) or Hamilton Island Airport ( connecting water taxi and ferry services available).

RAIL: Queensland Rail operates regular services in Proserpine from most major Australian cities. (Bus and taxi services to the Whitsundays available)

BUS: Coach companies operate regular services between most major cities and Proserpine and the Whitsundays (Airlie Beach).

ROAD: from south: Travel the Bruce Highway north from Brisbane 1075 km to Proserpine, turn right just north of Proserpine and just over the bridge.
ROAD: from north: Travel the Bruce Highway south from Townsville approximately 250 km to a turnoff left (east)(13 north of Proserpine). Follow this road for approximately 10km. and turn left again at the "Strathdickie Smithy". Follow this road for about 8 km and turn left at the "T" intersection. This is Shute Harbour Road. Follow it to Cannonvale(~8 km), Airlie Beach(~10km) & Shute Harbour(~20km).
